Product Review: Great fun for middle-distance commutes
This electric bike is great fun to ride and (of course) cheap to run. My friends got a kick out of trying it, too, albeit nearly crashing it every time.
The bike's controller has 3 speeds - low, medium, high. However, the controller is pretty simplistic: the amount of assist given is not proportional to pedalling rate or effort - instead, the pedal sensor functions simply as an on/off switch.
When it detects that you're pedalling (at any speed or effort), it switches on the motor and tries to run it at a speed that corresponds to the low, medium or high settings. It does this whether you're pedalling furiously or simply moving your feet in a slow circle without contributing to the cycling effort.
This also means that you have to be careful when doing a slow U-turn or manoeuvring in heavy traffic, for example. The motor will kick in once you've done a revolution or two with the pedals, which could be dangerous. To avoid this, you can squeeze one of the brake levers...
